ESL One Hamburg Day 1 Recap

Secret lives to fight another day, EG gets eliminated.

The ESL One Hamburg 2018 mainstage kicked off today at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg Germany. The tournament had already seen its share of disappointment in the group stage. EU favorites Alliance, ppd’s new team Ninjas in Pyjamas and SEA favorites Mineski and EVOS were already eliminated in the group stage. Today the tournament saw an explosive first day of the main stage:

Virtus.pro vs Secret

The first game saw VP take on Team Secret. In their first match, VP drafted a Drow strat with No[O]ne on Huskar. The combination proved to be quite successful, as they won the match. The second match saw both the teams on equal footing. Despite losing the mid lane, MidOne’s Phantom Lancer proved too much for VP in the late game and Secret won. The second game saw No[O]one on Huskar once again while Ramzes got on his Signature Ursa. Secret’s Monkey King role had a hard time and was completely shut down. VP finally won the series 2-1.

Vici Gaming vs Aster:

The next match was between the Chinese powerhouses Vici and Aster. Both teams have been working tirelessly and have proven themselves again and again. However, Vici came out on top. After having a narrow defeat in the first match, Vici completely stomped their Chinese rivals in the next two matches.

EG vs Complexity:

EG and Complexity were fighting to stay in the tournament as they both reached the lower bracket. EG proved that even without Sumail, they were to be feared. They completely stomped complexity 2-0, with the second match having a score of 17-2 in EG’s favor.

Secret vs EG:

This series was perhaps the most interesting one. Both fan favorite teams were facing elimination on loss. The first game was pretty one sided, with YapZor performing amazingly on Enigma.

The second game was perhaps the best game of the tournament so far. Both teams were clinging on for their lives. Though the early stage went well for EG, Secret still made the game extend and last for more than 60 minutes. The last fight was breathtaking. NIsha built a Divine Rapier on TB, and Secret decided to secure a Roshan kill. EG tried intercepting it, and almost succeeded. However, at the last moment, MidOne stole the Aegis and Zai’s Supernova connected on Arteezy and Crit. Nedlees to say they died and EG called GG. Secret finally won 2-0.
