Fnatic out of the IEM Katowice Major

Once a bastion of Swedish CounterStrike, Fnatic now found themselves packing out of Poland as they drop out 1-3 at the New Challengers Stage of the Intel Extreme Masters Season XIII - Katowice Major 2019.

The highly anticipated round 4 that had teams such as Cloud9, Ninjas in Pyjamas and G2 Esports among others fight for survival saw Fnatic’s meltdown as they were reverse swept by G2 Esports who will take another shot at round 5.

The best of 3 series turned out to be an exchange of stomps. Fnatic opened strong with a 16-8 win over Mirage to gain the upperhand. G2 was quick to respond with their own 16-8 win in Dust II to force a rubber match in Overpass that the French squad ultimately win with a 16-5 performance.

This will be the first time that Fnatic will be knocked out on such an early phase in CS:GO Major history. Since the introduction of the Majors format, the three time Major champions had always been at the ‘Legends’ status – which means a top 8 finisher on every previous Major – prior to this event.

While the rest of the mentioned teams are glad to keep their Major hopes alive, Chinese representatives Tyloo and Vici Gaming found themselves in hot waters as they both lost their round 4 matches against western counterparts AVANGAR and Team Vitality respectively whom secured their spots at the next stage. Tyloo lost their last 2 rounds while Vici stumbled after two upset wins over Fnatic and C9 in the Swiss group stage.

The final day of the New Challengers Stage is set for tonight 8:00 PM UTC +8. Three more teams will join the New Legends foray with NIP taking on Vici Gaming while G2 faces Tyloo and C9 will look to edge out Winstrike.
