Valve has reset nearly 17,000 accounts that were found abusing the matchmaking system.
Smurfing and greifing have been quite a problem in Dota 2 since the beginning of the game. The subreddit, r/Dota2 has been rife with complaints regarding the matter. Valve had earlier introduced a new system, handing out six-month bans to griefers and people with excessive reports. But apparently, the smurfs and account buyers found a way to circumvent this system as well.
More recently, MoonMeander took to Twitlonger to explain how the boosters, smurfs and griefers were ruining the game.
He explained that high tier MMR players were purposefully feeding and running down mid, and got into low priority. Getting into low priority, according to MoonMeander, was fun for them as it was akin to playing in a smurf account, as they would play against players below their skill level. After they got out of LP, they again greifed and repeated the whole thing. MoonMeander also says that they had figured out how many games they could grief, creating smurfs while their mains had a downtime on how many games they griefed, so they wouldn’t get 6 months banned.
The current report system and low priority is in my opinion a failed system that does not deter players from ruining games. I'm not even talking about being toxic, or yelling, or stealing lanes and farm, this is literally about players who just run down mid/destroy items/purposely making your team lose. I would report these players, and then get them again in my next game, or my game tomorrow.
I've played 40 games combined in the last week since I returned from my vacation with friends and family and I'm utterly disappointed that in 2019 I'm still facing this issue where some games I just have to accept my -25. Usually I wouldn't care, but my New Year's resolution is to hit Rank 1 to give me and my team a confidence boost.
After his Twitlonger post blew up, Valve tweeted through their Dota 2 account that about 17,000 accounts have been reset because they were found abusing the ranked matchmaking.
If this move will prove to be effective, we do not know. We will have to wait and see if more accounts get banned, and if this will improve the state of PUB matches in Dota 2.
Until then, lewt us know about your experience with smurfs, griefers or booster.
